Methodology
How we collect, verify, and cross-reference US classification data — and where we draw the line on accuracy.
Data sources & import
NAICS 2022 / 2017 — imported from the official Census Bureau Excel structure and concordance files. Titles and descriptions are reproduced verbatim; hierarchy (sector → subsector → industry group → industry → national industry) is derived from code length and the official parent structure.
SIC 1987 — imported from the official SEC SIC code list. Each code retains its SEC office classification.
SBA size standards — matched to NAICS from the SBA Table of Size Standards (effective March 17, 2023). Footnotes and receipts-based changes are included where the source provides them.
SOC / O*NET — imported from the O*NET 30.2 database (U.S. Department of Labor), including job zones and descriptions.
PSC — imported from the GSA Product Service Codes Manual (April 2025).
UNSPSC — imported from the O*NET UNSPSC reference (GS1 US open standard).
Schedule B — imported from the Census Bureau Schedule B 2026 fixed-width file, including NAICS, SITC, and End-Use references.
HTSUS — imported from the USITC HTS 2026 Basic Edition CSV, including duty rate columns.
Cross-referencing
Official concordances — NAICS 2022-to-2017 and Schedule B-to-HTS use official Census/USITC correspondence tables where they exist.
Heuristic mapping — SIC-to-NAICS and code-to-occupation links use title word-overlap scoring. These are suggestions, not authoritative conversions. They are clearly labeled as heuristic.
Risk Score — the score is deterministic, computed from seven verifiable factors: official-source verification, international match, edition migration path, hierarchy completeness, SBA documentation, trade-code match, and SIC crosswalk. Each factor is shown on the page. No random or hidden weighting.
What we do not do
- We do not invent statistics, counts, ratings, or search-volume numbers.
- We do not fabricate occupations, mappings, or "related" links — only data present in official sources is shown.
- We do not provide legal, compliance, or business advice.
Limitations
- SIC-to-NAICS and code-to-occupation matches are computed, not official — verify against source documents for compliance-critical use.
- Some NAICS codes may not have SBA standards in the source data.
- Data reflects the source document as of its publication date; newer revisions may exist.
Updates
Data is refreshed from source documents as official revisions are published. The current reference covers editions current as of 2026.
